2025 Winter Warmup (Event Recap)

On Saturday, December 20, 2025,  the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center hosted its annual Winter Warmup Coat Drive & Distribution, a community-based effort to provide new coats, hats, and gloves to children and families in need.

This year we distributed over 650 coats to children and families in need. 

Community Partners included Toyota, Dallas Mavericks, Accident & Injury Chiropractic, Target, Terris Perkins, Jr., LIRA, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter), Empowering the Masses, HELP, Peter & Dena Silberman, In the City For Good, Junior League of Dallas, Project Unity, Bridgford, WestRock, CBRE, Mahiri Takai, Bimbo, IDK Foundation, SoftwareDXT, Doris Edmon, RoseSharon Wright, Crystal Tyler, Thelma Gay, Mildred Pierce, Clinton Marshall, Patience Mbamba, and Jordan Lowder.

2023 Winter Warmup Coat Drive & Distribution (Event Recap)

On Saturday, December 16, 2023,  the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center hosted its annual Winter Warmup Coat Drive & Distribution, a community-based effort to provide new coats, hats, and gloves to children and families in need.

There were 187 registered families and over 600 children who participated in the drive-through distribution. Free coats, hats, gloves, socks, sleeping bags, blankets, clothing, shoes, and hygiene kits were also provided to 150+ homeless and 40 community residents.

Community Partners included LIRA, HELP, Peter and Dena Silberman, Terris Perkins, Jr., Empowering the Masses, Miles of Freedom, CBRE, DTLR, Accident & Injury Chiropractic, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter), In the City for Good, Accelerated Active Energy, Dallas Independent School District, Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas, IDK Foundation, Cummins, The Lamplighter School, Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, and Moondo World.

2022 MLK Winter Warmup (Event Recap)

On Saturday, December 17, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center hosted its annual Winter Warm-Up, a community-based effort to provide new coats, hats, and gloves to over 800 children in need. Registered guests participated in a drive through to receive a free winter coat, hats, and gloves, along with shelf-stable food items. 

LIRA provided free hats, gloves, socks, and blankets to the homeless, along with a hot meal, sponsored by Accident & Injury Chiropractic.

Community Partners included LIRA, HELP, Peter and Dena Silberman, Terris Perkins, Jr., Miles of Freedom, CBRE, Empowering the Masses, KIPP Texas Public Schools, Accident & Injury Chiropractic, Green Careers Dallas, Kelly Drake, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Winter Warm-Up Coat Drive and Distribution

2022 MLK Winter Warm-Up Coat Drive and Distribution

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center’s annual Winter Warm-Up is a community-based effort to provide new coats, hats, and gloves to children in need. We will also be distributing free food boxes for registered families.

To receive a free coat, children must be between the ages of 3 months to 18 years old. There is a limit of 5 coats per household. You must be registered to participate.

Online registration begins at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 21, at www.dallasmlkcenter.com/winter-warmup.

The drive-thru coat distribution will take place on Saturday, December 17, starting at 10 a.m. 

If you are interested in donating coats, hats, gloves, or food items, please contact our office at 214-670-8418. All donated items must be received by Wednesday, December 7, 2022.


 

2021 MLK Winter Warm-Up

On Saturday, December 18, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center hosted its annual Winter Warm-Up event, a community-based effort to provide new coats, hats, and gloves to 800 children in need.

Registered guests participated in the drive through to receive a free winter coat, a food box with fresh produce and dry goods, STEAM kits from the Dallas Public Library (MLK Branch), gloves from KIPP, laundry detergent and hand sanitizer from In the City For Good, and teddy bears and toys from White Rock United Methodist at Owenwood, in collaboration with Kelly Drake, MLK Advisory Board member. COVID Vaccinations were also available on-site, provided by Abundant Life AME Church and Foremost Family Health Center.
