Empowering the Masses Phlebotomy and Community Health Worker Graduation

On Saturday, August 19, 2023, Empowering the Masses hosted its Summer 2023 Phlebotomy and Community Health Worker Graduation at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.

There was a total of 20 graduates, including 11 Phlebotomy and 9 Community Health Worker students.  There were 215 attendees in total.

Special guests included Kelly Drake, MLK Advisory Board Member (District 9), Empowering the Masses Board and Staff, and Tammy Johnson, Founder of Empowering the Masses.

Journey, Next Steps

On Saturday, July 8, 2023, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, in collaboration with LIRA Group, hosted Journey, Next Steps, a college readiness program for graduating seniors.

Students were selected to participate after submitting an essay describing their biggest challenge in life and how it prepared them for their next journey into college. Once accepted into the program, students attended a college readiness program, went on college tours, and received a college starter kit with with everything needed to prepare for their new journey.

Upon completion of the program, students were gifted new laptops, refrigerators, microwaves, bedding, toiletries, and more in preparation for their freshman year of college.

Sponsors included Geico, Vistra Corp., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (Tau Rho Omega Chapter), Southern Methodist University, Peter & Dena Silberman, Terris Perkins, Jr., Oncor, and the City of Dallas Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.

2023 “Taste of Soul” Soul Food Cook-Off

2023 “Taste of Soul” Soul Food Cook-Off

Bring your family to the “Taste of Soul” on Saturday, February 25, at the MLK, Jr. Recreation Center, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., for a soul food cook-off promoting local chefs and celebrating the diversity of soul food cuisine. 

The Taste of Soul will also feature raffles and prizes, a fun photo booth, and live entertainment for all to enjoy.

Admission is FREE! Come out and cast your vote for the best dish!

You can also enter your best soul food dish for a chance to win a cash prize! The Grand Prize winner will receive $750!

Rediscovering Lost Values

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, along with the Dallas Civil Rights Museum, will host a panel discussion entitled “Rediscovering Lost Values” on Thursday, February 28, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the MLK, Jr. Community Center (2922 MLK Boulevard, Bldg. A). This year’s theme was taken from a speech Dr. King delivered in Detroit in 1954.

Panelists include Matt Houston, President of the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce; Rev. L. Robin Murray, Assistant Minister of Children’s Ministry at Joy Tabernacle AME Church; and Dale Long, member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Big Brothers Big Sisters National Partnership Chairman. The moderator is Norma Adams Wade, Journalist from the Dallas Morning News. There will also be a special presentation by Millicent Rone, President of the American Airlines African American Diversity Network.

“We hope attendees will be inspired by our presenters to continue to move Dr. King’s dream forward through action, on a sustained basis,” says Emma Rodgers, curator of the Dallas Civil Rights Museum.

The Dallas Civil Rights Museum will also be open for tours and information. This event is free and open to the public.

Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

The Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is a long-standing tradition of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, with a series of events honoring King’s life and legacy. For the first time in the City’s history, there will be more than a week-long commemoration, which will begin on January 9, 2019, and will run through January 22, 2019.

This year’s theme is “Reconciliation: Moving the Dream Forward” and all events will touch on various issues Dr. King championed during his lifelong career of activism.
