On June 19, the MLK Fresh Produce Distribution Center will open to the public to increase access to fresh food for the South Dallas community. Sponsored by Leadership Dallas, the distribution center will be open on Wednesdays and Saturdays to provide fresh fruits, vegetables, and dry goods to the surrounding community.
Statistics
- In Dallas County, 18.2 percent of the population is considered food insecure.
- Nearly 700,000 Dallas County residents, including over 245,000 children, live in lower-income communities that lack access to healthy, affordable foods.
- The uneven distribution of supermarkets and healthy food resources is a serious problem in Greater Dallas.
- Currently, the Fair Park/South Dallas neighborhood has limited access to fresh food, and families often have to choose between paying for food or paying for other basic living expenses such rent, utilities and medical care.
Grand Opening
There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Grand Opening of the distribution center on Wednesday, June 19, at 2:00 p.m. during the Juneteenth Celebration.
Schedule
The distribution center will be open each Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
