The Harambee Festival is a community-based educational and cultural event that was created in the early 1970s, by the founding members of the Harambee Festival Steering Committee, a group of community-minded citizens who gathered at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center to form an alternative to Halloween. Harambee is an East African Swahili word meaning “Let’s Pull Together” or “Unity.” Their objective was to organize a celebration that would provide a positive, cultural experience for children, youth, and adults. For the past forty-four years, that original objective has become quite a success with well over 5,000 people attending annually.
This year’s theme is “Keeping It Clean & Green,” motivating the community to choose healthier ways of life to improve their quality of life. The Harambee Festival’s overall mission is to educate and unify all generations, cultures, and social groups while providing a positive and family-friendly atmosphere for everyone.
The cost to be a vendor is $75, which can be paid via Gift Card, Money Order, or Cashier’s Check, made payable to Harambee. Proceeds will benefit the MLK Social Services Department and the Harambee Steering Committee. Food vendors are required to implement all Food Protection and Handling requirements while in attendance for this event and we require that ALL vendors donate snacks or candy to be placed in the children’s gift bags.
Vendors will receive a 6-foot table and 2 chairs, in a 10′ X 10′ space. You must bring your own canopy and extension cords if you need electricity.

Food vendors are required to obtain a Temporary Special Event Food Permit to participate in the festival. Please download the 2019 Harambee Festival-Consumer Health Division Memo and take it to the Consumer Health Division (located at 7901 Goforth Rd., Dallas, Texas 75238) to receive your permit.
Please submit a copy of your permit along with your vendor application.
